Globe WiMax Internet Service is here!

Months since it announced deployment of a Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access(WiMAX) service, Ayala-owned Globe Telecom finally announced the commercial availability of its own service this month.

Globe Telecom said WiMAX would complement existing DSL and 3G services being offered under its broadband services.

The enhanced wireless broadband service would be available in South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, Globe said in a statement.

WiMAX uses the 802.16 standard developed by the WiMAX Forum. Currently, it has a maximum bandwidth speed of up to 70 megabits per second, providing bigger bandwidth for data-hungry applications like streaming video.

Globe said that subscribers would get a maximum bandwidth of up to 512 kilobits per second at P795 per month under its WiMAX-powered Globe Broadband service.

“We challenge anyone with a competitive wireless subscription to try out our WiMAX-backed plans. We are so confident with our service that we challenge you try out our connection, risk-free. Should you be unhappy with the connection within one month from installation, we’ll give you your money-back, no questions asked,”

Internet use in Philippines Expanding to Lower Income Groups

A total of 28 percent of Filipinos in national urban Philippines are regular Internet users with five percent of users saying they access the Internet everyday, a survey by the Nielsen Company and Yahoo Philippines revealed Thursday.

The survey, conducted from October to November 2008, said Internet usage in urban centers has grown from 20 percent in the first quarter of 2008 to 28 percent by the end of last year. He said there are an estimated 35 million Filipinos in urban centers nationwide.

Jay Bautista, AGB Nielsen Company executive director for media, said Internet cafes have become an important access point for Filipino Internet users with 71 percent of the country’s estimated 20 million Internet population saying they have accessed the Internet through e-cafes in the past three months.

Great equalizer

He said affordability of access, either through Internet cafes, cheap netbooks and PCs, and cheap broadband is increasing the local Internet user base. He added, however, that Internet cafes are clearly favored by majority of the youth and people in the D and E socioeconomic classes.

“Internet cafes have become the great equalizer for all social classes in accessing the Internet. Forty-seven percent of all Internet time by Filipino Internet users are spent in Internet cafes. It’s the only medium that allows you to communicate, do research and even entertain you for 10 to 15 pesos an hour,” Bautista told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

The survey showed that 71 percent of Filipino Internet users accessed the Internet through Internet cafes in the past three months, 27 percent said they accessed it at home, seven percent said they accessed it at the office, and seven percent accessed it in school.

Eighty-one percent of Internet users from Class CDE said they are regular Internet café users compared to 21 percent from Class ABC1 and 27 percent from Class C2.

Bautista said the Yahoo-Nielsen Net Index Initiative is the first ever in-depth study of Filipino Internet users across 22 major cities in the Philippines. The survey was conducted using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 respondents aged 10 and above across all economic classes who have used the Internet at least once a month.

Young Internet base

The survey also revealed that the younger generation have become early adopters of the Internet. At least 49 percent of Internet users in the Philippines are ages 10-19 while 32 percent are ages 20-29.

Fifty-percent of Filipino Internet users ages 10-19 years old said they accessed the Internet at least once in the past month.

The survey also showed that Internet use in the Philippines is not restricted just to the big cities like Metro Manila. “For example, 35 percent of Filipinos in Cagayan de Oro have accessed the Internet in the past month,” Bautista said.

The survey also showed that 55 percent of all online users are from Class D socioeconomic class.

The survey also showed that Filipino Internet users are more likely to be opinion leaders and early adopters compared to traditional media consumers. They are likely to be individualistic, trend conscious, willing to pay for quality products, and are tech enthusiasts.

Breakdown of users Past Month Internet Access

10-19 years 50 percent
20-29 years 41 percent
30-39 19 percent
40-49 12 percent
50+ 3 percent

Online gaming, social networking drive usage

The survey also showed that e-mail, instant messaging and search are the most common online activities for Filipino Internet users. It said Yahoo is the dominant web-based e-mail, instant messaging, and search service in the Philippines.

It also showed that online gaming and social networks are becoming more common online activities for local Internet users. The survey said 53 percent of Internet users play online games. They are likely to be males and below 20 years old.

Bautista said social networks have become an important tool in communicating with friends and family. Fifty-one percent of local Internet users said they access social networking sites every month; 92 percent said they have a Friendster account.

The survey said 42 percent said they read a blog in the past month with at least one in three Filipino Internet users saying they have a blog.

The survey also showed offline texting is moving online. The survey showed 23 percent of Internet users regularly send text messages via the Internet.

On the other hand, online transactions or commerce remain low. Only three percent of Internet users conduct online banking activities or make online purchases.

Expandable ads on the Google content

Expandable ads on the Google content network are designed to automatically expand in the direction where the most space is available on the screen. They must be clicked by the user to expand and contract.

These features help create a positive experience for users and provide advertisers with more accurate ad engagement metrics by avoiding expansions triggered by accidental mouse-overs. Expandable ads can also help AdSense publishers by engaging users on their sites with more ad variety and opportunities to interact with the ad content.

Globe Telecom doubles Philippine Internet Bandwitdh

In a lunch event today, Globe Telecom and Tata Communications announced that their new submarine cable system has been activated and carrying traffic to the Philippines.

Called the Tata Global Network - Intra Asia (TGN-IA), the cable system has been in plans since 2006 (even before the Taiwan earthquake that crippled internet in the Philippines).

The cable system now connects Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Japan to the Philippines. The cable networks were designed to avoid the earthquake zones around Taiwan and will offer a total capacity of 3.84 Terabits per second.

Globe’s initial capacity is 50Gbps which effectively doubles the total bandwidth capacity of the Philippines.

Well, what does this mean to regular consumers?

Much less congestion in Globe’s network so subscribers are able to achieve their allocated bandwidth speeds.
Reduced latency for business customers. This is good for VOIP and network gaming. The route between Singapore to Japan will now have the lowest latency in Asia at only 63ms.

Alternative international cable network that will reduce incidents (like connectivity failures and congestions) caused by natural disasters like the Taiwan earthquake of 2006.
The cable landing site is now located at Ballesteros in Cagayan province, away from the usual landing sites in Nasugbu, Batangas. Globe Telecom spent $90 milllion for this project.

3rd Party iPod Shuffle Headphones Require Apple Licensed

This article is for those who are planning to get the new 3rd Gen Ipod Shuffle;
Note that the new 'buttonless' iPod shuffle can only be controlled by headphones with a special Apple hardware authentication chip. As of the moment, only the headphones that ship with the 3rd Gen Shuffle have this particular Apple authentication.

That means that third parties will have to pay Apple for the privilege of making shuffle-compatible accessories, and you can bet they'll just pass that cost right on to consumers -- we wouldn't expect any cheap headphone adapters or inexpensive replacement headphones for the littlest iPod.

Apple To Launch Netbook With Touch Screen

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is planning to launch a netbook computer with a touch screen monitor as early as the second half of this year, two people close to the situation told Dow Jones Newswires Tuesday.

The mini laptop computers will likely have monitor screens that are between 9.7-inches and 10-inches, one person, who declined to be named, said.

Another person said other specifications and functions are still under evaluation.

Apple is working with Taiwan's Wintek Corp. (2384.TW), a contract manufacturer of small and medium displays, and Quanta Computer Inc. (2382.TW), the world's largest notebook maker by revenue, to assemble the new netbooks, the second person said.

Netbooks are primarily designed for Internet browsing and mobile computing. They cost less than conventional laptop computers, and are lighter and smaller.

A slew of PC makers including Dell Inc. (DELL), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and Acer Inc. (2353.TW) have in recent months entered this market segment. The companies are hoping to tap new computer users in emerging markets.

Apple's entry may come in what is expected to be a very tough year for computer sales. Desktop-computer shipments in particular are expected to fall by nearly one-third globally in 2009 as consumers increasingly shift to laptop computers, according to projections released by research firm Gartner Inc. earlier in March.

While netbook computers have become a major sales driver for computer companies, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs last year dismissed netbooks, even going so far as to suggest Apple's third-generation iPhone - a smartphone device that offer multifunctions - could serve as a netbook. Jobs told analysts in October Apple isn't "tremendously worried" the slump will drive customers to less-expensive PCs and added, "we don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk."

Japan's HRP-4C 'Fashion Model Robot'

HRP-4C Robot - A new talking, walking robot from Japan has a female face that can smile and has trimmed down to 43 kilograms (95 pounds) to make a debut at a fashion show. But unfortunately it still hasn't even cleared safety standards to share the catwalk with human super models.

HRP-4C Robot was designed to look like an average Japanese woman, although its silver-and-black body makes it appear to be wearing a space-suit. It will appear in a Tokyo fashion show, although without any clothes, in a special section.

The robotic framework for the HRP-4C without the face and other coverings will go on sale for about 20 million yen ($200,000) each, and its programming technology will be made public so other people can come up with fun moves for the robot, the scientists said.

Japan boasts one of the leading robotics industries in the world, and the government is pushing to develop the industry as a road to growth. Automaker Honda Motor Co. has developed Asimo, which can walk and talk, although has no human like-face.

The New iPod Shuffle that Talk to You

New iPod Shuffle
Apple has quietly introduced a new 4GB iPod shuffle. Not only is it bigger on the inside -- it's smaller on the outside. So small, in fact, that it has no buttons other than the shuffle mode switch. All the controls are now on the earbud cord, which means that you'll be stuck using Apple's own earbuds until third party versions make it to stores.

The new Shuffle also talks to you. Press the center button on the remote (a long press) and the "VoiceOver" function will tell you the name of the song and artist you are listening to, and it will also read your playlists.

This is a rather helpful new feature, especially since, at 4GB, the Shuffle is approaching the capacity of the original full-sized white iPod.
VoiceOver speaks 14 languages, from Spanish to Mandarin. The actual speech is generated by iTunes and then schlepped across to the Shuffle when you sync. This means that if you are syncing with a Mac running OS X Leopard (the latest version) you get to hear the rather good robotic voice of Alex. If you are running an older version of the OS, or using a PC you get a rather crappy voice. You can check them out here at the Apple site.
New iPod Shuffle $79
And because the Shuffle now reads out your playlists, you can skip through them until you find the right one. Suggestion: Keep the names short and distinctive to avoid frustration.
You can have the new iPod Shuffle 4GB at $79.
